Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER)

First Responder Awareness

The goal of this course is to train employees to recognize a hazardous materials situation, take personal protective measures, and initiate an emergency response by notifying the proper authorities.  Topics include: understanding hazardous materials, recognition of a hazardous substance in an emergency, and understanding the role of a first responder.

First Responder Operations

Employees that are expected to respond to hazardous materials releases in a defensive fashion, and contain the release from a safe distance, should attend this course prior to dealing with a release.  This course will cover: federal regulatory requirements for hazardous materials emergencies, recognizing chemical hazards, personal protective equipment, and defensive spill response methods.

Hazardous Materials Technician

Employees who are expected to respond to hazardous material releases to control, contain, and/or clean them up should attend this course.  This course will cover: hazardous materials information, chemicals fundamentals and toxicology, sources of information, assessment tools, personal protective equipment, emergency response operations, decontamination, medical surveillance, emergency related concerns, tabletop scenarios, and indoor/outdoor drills.

Hazardous Materials Specialist

The fourth competency level of hazmat training under HAZWOPER is Hazardous Materials Specialist.  The goal of this course is to provide in-depth knowledge of and practice with personal protective equipment, HazMat monitors and detectors, decontamination, and advanced control techniques.  Prerequisite: Hazardous Materials Technician.

On-scene Incident Commander

The course provides a general overview of ICS and an opportunity to apply incident management skills to HazMat events.  It is designed to provide a firm foundation of ICS skills for team members as well as enhance the skills of team leaders.  Students will practice the application of ICS through tabletop scenarios and a simulation that will include elements such as coordinating with outside responders, community notification, and media relations.

HAZWOPER Refresher

This course satisfies the requirements for providing emergency response and preparedness refresher training to Hazardous Materials Technicians as required in 29 CFR 1910.120(q).  The course is designed to keep the Technician certification current and allow response personnel to “brush-up” on elements such as chemistry for response personnel, emergency operations, and related safety concerns.

General Site Worker

This class will certify employees in the training requirements of the OSHA HAZWOPER Standard 29 CFR 1910.120(e).  Employees expected to be general site workers should attend this course prior to responding to a hazardous materials release, working in a hazardous substance removal activity, or conducting operations at treatment, storage, and disposal facilities. This course will cover: introduction to HAZWOPER and the Incident Command System, hazards at the site, sources of information, hazardous materials worker safety, first aid and CPR, material handling, emergency response operations, outdoor practical exercises, and hands-on scenarios.

NIMS Incident Command Systems

Homeland Security Presidential Directive–5 directed the Secretary of Homeland Security to develop and administer a National Incident Management System.  NIMS provides a consistent nationwide template to enable all government, private-sector, and nongovernmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents.  This course is designed to teach the basic concepts of the Incident Command System as well as the NIMS model of incident management. 

Topic components include: command and management, incident preparedness, resource management, and communications and information management.  This course includes in-depth tabletop drills.

NIMS Update Course

This course is designed to update the training of those with basic ICS training to match the NIMS model.  Participants should have complete ICS training and have ICS experience.

Oil Spill Response Training

This course is designed to address exposure and operational-related safety issues associated with an oil spill emergency response.  Specific oil spill response techniques are emphasized in this course.  This course will offer hands-on application drills and scenarios and may be applied by the employer to HAZWOPER training for oil spill emergency responders for the 24-hour technician level certification.

Confined Space Entry

Employees that work in confined spaces are required by the OSHA Standard to be trained prior to entering a confined space and whenever conditions change to present a new hazard in a confined space.  This course will cover: confined space definition, key aspects of the OSHA standard, entry team roles and responsibilities, hazard/exposure condition recognition, pre-entry testing and continuous monitoring, entry and personal protective equipment, entry permit, ventilation, communication and evacuation, retrieval and rescue procedures.

Confined Space Rescue

This course is designed for employees that will be expected to perform confined space rescue functions.  Employees will be introduced to rescue operating procedures, the emergency incident management system, confined space rescue equipment and dealing with hazardous substances in confined spaces.  Employees will be participating in rigorous hands-on skill evolutions involving horizontal and vertical retrievals, altered atmospheres, lockout/tagout concerns and handling injured victims.

Confined Space Rescue Refresher

This refresher course is designed to maintain the operation readiness of confined space rescue personnel.  The course is primarily made up of skills practice and a hands-on response scenario.

Industrial High Angle Rope Rescue

High angle rescue is considered to be terrain that has a slope angle of 60° and higher. Rescuers are totally dependent upon the ropes used to keep them and the victims from falling and to gain access to the rescue location. This course consists of a classroom lecture and practical field exercises with a major emphasis placed upon hands-on practical exercises. Major subject areas covered include: rope construction and care, rescue knot tying, rope accessory equipment, litter types, lowering systems, hauling systems, and litter operations

Industrial Fire Brigade Member I

This class delivers a balance of lecture and hands-on skills applications in the following areas: fireground communications, operating within an incident command system, effective use of portable fire extinguishers, property conservation, emergency egress from dangerous fires, and more. Students completing this class will be certified in compliance with NFPA 1081 Chapter 5 as Incipient Industrial Fire Brigade Members and will be qualified to enroll in Industrial Fire Brigade Member II.

Industrial Fire Brigade Member II

This class delivers a balance of lecture and hands-on skills applications, including live fire evolutions, in the following areas: Manual fire suppression using hoselines, PPE, SCBA, forcible entry, ventilation, overhaul, water supplies, and more. Students completing this class will be certified in compliance with NFPA 1081 Chapter 7 as Interior Structural Industrial Fire Brigade Members. Pre-requisite: Industrial Fire Brigade Member I

Industrial Fire Brigade Member Refresher

This hands-on refresher course is designed to allow industrial fire brigade members to practice essential fire suppression skills in a live fire environment.  Each refresher course will involve team-based scenarios and evolutions that are designed to be managed as if they were real situations.

Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials Training

The goal of this course is to certify HazMat employees per the DOT HazMat training requirements found in 49 CFR 172 subpart H.  Personnel who directly affect hazardous materials transportation (including hazardous waste) must receive DOT training within 90 days after being hired and recurrent training every three years.  This course addresses the required training elements for personnel who transport, handle, or package hazardous materials for shipment.  Course topics include hazardous materials classification, use of the HazMat table, package markings, packaging and labeling requirements, shipping papers, emergency response information, and the newly added security awareness requirements.

RCRA Hazardous Waste Training

This general awareness course is designed to assist employees in understanding the hazardous waste management requirements of RCRA.  This course will cover the definition of hazardous waste, classification of hazardous wastes, labeling, waste storage, transportation and packaging of waste, hazardous waste manifests, and emergency information.  This course is typically 4-6 hours in length and can be used as a refresher training as needed.

Respiratory Protection

This training course is designed to provide employees with the training requirements of the OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard, 29 CFR 1910.134.  This course is required for employees that wear respirators for protection from air contaminated with harmful dusts, fogs, fumes, mists, gases, smokes, sprays, or vapors.  Respiratory protection training should be given to the employee prior to wearing a respirator and annually thereafter.  This course will cover: regulatory requirements of the OSHA standard, respirator use, maintenance, and storage, limitation and capabilities of respirators, inspection and user-seal checks, and medical signs and symptoms of improper use.

Fall Protection

This course is designed to meet the training requirements of OSHA’s fall protection standard.  Topics include recognition of fall hazards, use and operation of fall protection systems such as guardrail systems, personal fall arrest systems, safety net systems, warning line systems, safety monitoring systems, and controlled access zones, procedures for erecting, maintaining, disassembling, and inspecting fall protection systems; and the major element of the OSHA fall protection standard.

OSHA 10-hour for General Industry

OSHA outreach training is designed to orient people with OSHA rules and regulations.  The 10-hour program is designed to be an overview of OSHA standards and the practical application of the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.  Each student will receive his or her own user-friendly version of 29 CFR 1910.

OSHA 30-hour for General Industry

OSHA outreach training is designed to orient people with OSHA rules and regulations.  The 30-hour program is designed to be an intensive review of site-specific OSHA standards and the practical application of the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.  Each student will receive his or her own user-friendly version of 29 CFR 1910.
